GEMt Level 3 Dry Needling: What the Credential Means

GEMt Level 3 (Advanced Dry Needling) has a clear entry bar: Levels 1 and 2, plus roughly 100 supervised sessions. A PJ physio explains what that actually means.

When people message me about dry needling clinics in the Klang Valley, the useful follow-up is rarely "how many years?" It's the course name. The level. Who taught it.

That's what this is about: GEMt Level 3 dry needling. What GEMt is, what Level 3 actually requires, and what I completed. For how a session runs, start with the dry needling physio service page.

What GEMt is

GEMt (Global Education of Manual Therapy) is an Australian organisation that trains clinicians in dry needling and manual therapy. They run courses in Kuala Lumpur regularly. The dry needling path is Level 1, then Level 2, then Level 3 (Advanced Dry Needling).

The title on my certificates is Trigger Point Dry Needling – Applications for Pain Management and Sports Injuries. That's Western trigger-point anatomy and clinical application, not Traditional Chinese Medicine. Same thin needle as acupuncture; different map. I've covered that comparison in dry needling vs acupuncture.

Why Level 3 is a different bar

A weekend intro and an advanced course both get listed as "dry needling training" on clinic sites. They are not the same.

GEMt Level 3 (Advanced Dry Needling) requires completion of Levels 1 and 2 and approximately 100 supervised clinical dry needling sessions before enrolment. That is the part patients can actually check. Levels 1 and 2 get you onto the table; Level 3 assumes you already needle in clinic and goes further.

I put Level 3 first in public copy because it's the highest GEMt dry needling level I finished, and because the ~100-session entry bar is concrete. Levels 1 and 2 sit underneath. They aren't the headline.

My GEMt path

I've been practising dry needling since 2018. I completed GEMt Level 3 (Advanced Dry Needling) in November 2019, trained directly by Robert De Nardis, GEMt's Director & Principal Presenter. Level 2 was the year before, also with De Nardis in Malaysia.

That's from the Level 3 weekend: me and De Nardis with the cert. Not a stock photo. Not a scanned certificate either. Physiotherapy since 2017, needling since 2018, Level 3 in November 2019. I stick to those dates because "X years of dry needling" is too easy to invent and too hard for a patient to check.

Degrees and the rest of the CV are on the About page. This one stays on the GEMt question.

How to check someone's dry needling training

Ask for the course name and level before anyone needles you. A real answer names a programme, a level, and roughly when. "I've been doing this for years" is not a training record.

What I listen for:

  1. A named course and level you can look up — for me, GEMt Level 3 Advanced Dry Needling. "Certified dry needling practitioner" is not a GEMt title I use, and it isn't a Malaysian specialist register either.
  2. Assessment before the needle. Needling with no movement check is a different service from physio-led care. More on that choice in dry needling physio or acupuncturist.
  3. Sterile, single-use needles. No exceptions.
  4. What happens after. Exercise, load management, or a plan — not just another booking.

GEMt has a public Find a Practitioner directory. Getting listed is membership-based and opt-in; finishing the course doesn't put you on it automatically. If a public entry for this clinic goes live, we'll link it. Until then, the named Level 3 claim, the dates above, and the course photo are what you have on this site.

What the credential actually changes

Completing GEMt Level 3 (Advanced Dry Needling) training means I finished the staged GEMt pathway through the advanced course, including the clinical-hours bar before Level 3. It doesn't mean every shoulder knot needs a needle. Plenty of people do better with load and exercise first. Some need a referral. Needling is one tool; it isn't the whole plan.

Session flow, safety, and booking are on the dry needling physio service page. Come back here when you want the GEMt Level 3 detail.
